What This Is, and What I Did to Paul Hamon's Childhood Photos

None of it was my idea. My parents spent a day going back through the albums, scanned what they found, and sent it all to me with this:

What arrived were photographs that are small, soft, and slightly wrong in colour — the ordinary output of a cheap camera, a suburban photo lab, and half a century in a warm house. Nobody took them to be looked at closely. They were taken so that someone would remember.

I scanned them, and then I ran each one through an AI restoration model. What comes back is startling: skin has pores again, a shirt has a weave, the blur at the edge of a face resolves into an ear. It is very easy to look at the restored version and feel that the photograph has been rescued — that this is what the moment actually looked like, finally recovered.

It isn't, quite. A restoration model doesn't recover detail; it predicts it. Where the original held a handful of blurred pixels of a face, the model proposes a plausible face, learned from millions of other faces. Most of the time the guess is close enough that you'd never question it. Occasionally it is subtly, unnervingly wrong — a mouth that sets differently, a jaw a few degrees off, once even a face changed to the wrong gender or a detail invented from nothing — and it is wrong about the face of someone I love, in a way that is very hard to see unless you have the original next to it.

So I've put the original next to it, on every photograph's own page. Each one shows the restored image large, because that's the one worth looking at, and the original small, because that's the one that's true. The blurb tells you what was happening and who is in it, and where the AI got something wrong, I've said so. If the two versions disagree about somebody's face, the small one wins.

Method: How I Restored Paul Hamon's Childhood Photos with AI

Restoring fifty-two scans by hand would have taken a very long time, and hand-retouching invites its own kind of invention — a restorer's guess is still a guess, just a slower one. Instead I used the paid tier of Google Gemini, in two passes, and ran every photograph through the same process rather than improvising a new approach each time.

The first pass doesn't touch the image at all: it asks the model to look at the scan and describe what it actually sees — the era, the physical damage, the colour cast, the lighting — and to write its own restoration prompt from that reading. The second pass then runs those instructions, generated specifically for that one photograph, back against the original. The point of splitting it into two passes is that the second pass is never working from a generic "restore this old photo" prompt; it's working from an analysis of this particular scan, which is as close as I could get to a repeatable, photograph-specific process without hand-retouching all fifty-two images myself.

Pass one — analysis

Please scan and analyze this vintage photo. Identify the era, physical damage (scratches, tears, stains), lighting/color issues (sepia tones,  yellowing, red color cast, low contrast), and key visual details. Based  on your analysis, write a precise, detailed restoration prompt I can use to enhance this image while preserving 100% of the original facial identities and textures.

Pass two — restoration

The prompt Gemini produced from that analysis was then run against the original photograph. Nothing was hand-retouched afterwards. The instruction to preserve facial identity is in there for a reason, and it is the instruction the model is least able to keep — which is the whole argument for showing you the original as well.

Working notes

I ran this in Gemini 3.6 Thinking by default, and dropped back to 3.1 Pro whenever 3.6 made a mess of one. Neither could carry the whole set in one sitting: at roughly every eighth photograph the output started going off, and the fix was simply to start a new chat. Each of the 52 photographs below is the product of one prompt pair, not a long back-and-forth.

Anything marked in this colour has been altered by a generative model. The data line under each image records its IPTC digital source type, the same value embedded in the file itself.

Someone had given him a bottle of red wine for his birthday; he drank the entire bottle in his room to see what would happen, later threw up and was found wandering the hallway by his mother. Desrae put him to bed and Howard took this photograph so he could show it to Paul later. He did not drink alcohol again until his 21st birthday.
